    (ebb suh Dick) abbr. A character set used by IBM’s mainframe computers. Short for Extended Binary-Coded Decimal Interchange Code. Although rarely seen outside IBM anymore, the EBCDIC set is perhaps the second-best-known character set. It was originally developed for storage of data on punched cards. See also ASCII.
