n. An IC consisting of tens or hundreds of thousands of uncommitted logic gates that can be fairly easily customized to a particular application. Many ASICs are customized gate arrays. The gate array has lots of logic gates, all unconnected. Customers design a digital circuit, which is implemented by a single extra manufacturing step of adding a metallized layer that connects the gates as needed. This is faster and cheaper than designing an IC from scratch.
