    N. An electronic component that detects and measures a magnetic field. Hall effect sensors generate either a linear voltage (on the order of 1 to 2 mV per gauss of applied field) or a discrete 1 or 0, indicating the presence of a field of a given strength. The latter are extensively used in switches.
