    N. A piece of software that translates Java bytecodes into native opcodes and executes them. Abbreviated JVM. The bytecodes act as a portable binary format. In order to execute them on any platform, though, a JVM must be first be ported to the platform. However, the Java program need not be recompiled, thus making the Java executable highly portable.
