    N. A consortium of European electronics companies formed in 1985 to find a solution to the difficulty and expense of applying traditional bed-of-nails testing techniques to surface-mount ICs. Abbreviated JTAG. The result of this effort was the IEEE 1149.1 standard, which defined the so-called JTAG port. Their solution uses a testing technique called boundary scan.
